CYLC has been supporting traditional owners in their bid to be significantly involved in the development of bauxite resources around Aurukun. CYLC made a submission to the Australian Senate’s Inquiry into bauxite resources near Aurukun in Cape York, and to the Queensland Government’s Mineral Resources (Aurukun Bauxite Resource) Amendment Bill 2016. Both submissions argue that the Queensland Government’s deal with a multinational company to develop the bauxite resource should be reconsidered and that traditional owners’ rights to development be given a fair go. CYLC has been working closely with the traditional owners’ representative organisation, Ngan Aak Kunch (NAK), in this matter.
